Shop What You Got Challenge 2014

That’s right folks – it’s happening again!

The Shop What You Got Challenge will be kicking off on November 1st!

Are you ready to put your styling skills to the test?

The Challenge gets you to shop your own wardrobe by creating a capsule collection of just 30 items and wearing outfits comprised only of those items for the whole of November. That’s right – mixed, matched, styled and re-styled to create 30 outfits to cover every occasion for an entire month.

A number of brave fashionistas and I successfully completed this challenge last year. For me, personally, I really enjoyed the push to style my outfits – take what I already have hanging in my wardrobe and put them together in new and exciting ways. At the end of the month, I ended up having a bit of a wardrobe cleanse and got rid of those items hanging in my closet that I just didn’t love. It also saved me a fortune as I looked at my existing clothes instead of heading to the shops for a new outfit for every occasion. I got loads of different styling ideas from the other girls who played along and felt like I had more options with my 30 items than I did with the mountain of clothes hanging in my closet.

So the rules are pretty basic – pick your 30 items and wear outfits made up of only those items for 30 days.

There are a number of exemptions – the challenge is for your main outfit for the day – if you go to the gym, swim, wear a uniform – those items are not counted in your 30. Underwear is not included – please wear as much underwear as you wish for the duration of the challenge.

Shoes do count so choose your 30 items wisely! However to make things a little easier, this year accessories like belts, scarves and jewellery don’t count. It’s amazing how much these little touches can change the whole feel of an outfit and really maximize your options.

Apart from that – the way you play is up to you!

So, now for the big question… ARE YOU IN?

If you are a blogger – I will be hosting a linky party each week on a Friday to review all my outfits for the week – I’d love it if you linked up your Shop What You Got posts. There will also be a blog button (coming soon) for all challengers to let people know you are participating, and link back to the rules page.

You can also play along on social media using the hashtag #shopwhatyougot

  1. Yay! I’m really excited about this challenge Jo. Though, I have to admit, I’m a little apprehensive as I have a slight shopping addiction lol, so a shopping free November is a little scary. But I’m in! Shannon x

  2. Arghhhh I’m going to be on holiday again this year!! Well at home in NZ for a wedding, not a real holiday. Totally cheating if I’m living out of a suitcase for 10 days isn’t t? ๐Ÿ™‚

      1. Trouble is what I’ll be wearing in Sydney in November will more than likely be too cold to wear at home in NZ! I’m praying for warm weather. This is such a cool challenge. I can’t wait to take part. I need to put myself on a shopping restriction also. Although I always stock up on favourites from NZ shops when I’m home. That’s totally allowed right??!

        1. Ooo that will be tricky – the weather always makes it difficult. Although I do state that weather specific items (gumboots/raincoats) are exempt – so maybe your winter woolies don’t have to count. That’s the beauty of it – you play the way that works for you ๐Ÿ˜‰

  3. Still trying to work out how the heck to make this work for me this year. I have a plan, now to see if I can execute it. My work wardrobe has never been anything much at all… Maybe it’s time to step it up a notch. Count me as a tentative yes. ๐Ÿ˜‰

    1. I’m so excited that you are even considering it ๐Ÿ™‚ I think last year, I made my plain black suit jacket exempt as it hangs over the back of my chair at work, and therefore was not photographed on the outfits (but was worn to meetings etc.

      1. I am absolutely considering it. I was talking to my boss and she said go for it. My biggest thing will probably be items sent for editorial content on the blog will need to be worn when being shot and that’s it… That’s my plan. Anyway, let’s see if I can weed my selection down to 30 and go from there. ๐Ÿ˜‰

        1. Yeah – I tend to put outfits for editorial content in the same category as gym clothes – worn for a short time for a specific purpose and therefore not my ‘main’ styled outfit for the day… ๐Ÿ™‚

  4. I really should do this! Just thinking today that my wardrobe doesn’t need 6 black blazers……… The whole idea scares me though- thought maybe I could do it until I read it includes shoes. Do stockings count as an item?
Will you be doing a post on how to pick your items? Also I can shop right? Just no wearing it? Haha yes I have a shopping addiction.

    1. I would say that stocking are under-garments and therefore not counted ๐Ÿ™‚ it’s a really good way to relook at your wardrobe – I ended up having a wardrobe cleanse after the last one. Of course you can still shop – I’m not robbing anyone of one of life’s great joys ๐Ÿ™‚

  5. I saw this last year! I don’t know how I’ll go but I’m going to give it a try. It was great to see last year’s posts. My uni exams are all in November so it may end up being a wardrobe blessing in disguise!

  6. I have been thinking of this for a while….Want to take control of my time, and not spending so much time on looking for the perfect outfit every day The challenge for me is also to be creative and make up my own style! So ready for this! Simplify is the motto!

  7. This sounds like a fantastic idea to me as my cupboard is once again overflowing and I really should be saving money not buying more clothes!
I could post a picture each day on Instagram using the hash tag but will think on this a little more as I am not sure my friends will appreciate seeing a picture of what I am wearing every day lol!

    1. You could always create another IG account to play along with SWYG that way you don’t have to post your outfits shots to all your friends. To be honest, that was a little bit of a concern for me too when I started iCurvy – but I was surprised to receive nothing but great support from family and friends ๐Ÿ™‚

  8. Hey Jo

Thanks so much for introducing me to this challenge! I am definitely on board for it..I am currently on a shopping ban anyway after having a ‘shopaholic’s dream come true’ time in the States..So this will be fantastic to orgainse my staples and mix and re-mix pieces! My only worry how will I make it work with such limited pair of shoes..I’m sure most of you identify with that:-))
But I’m totally up for it..will post daily outfits via Instagram and do weekly round up on the blog too..
Thanks Jo…enjoy precious time with your little bub
