Sometimes I buy an item just because I love it. I have no idea how I’m going to style it, I just want it in my wardrobe. Then again, there are those times that I buy something with a really clear styling idea in mind, but then it creates a block and that’s the ONLY way I can think to style the item.
Either way – it becomes a bit of a styling dilemma, which means the poor item just hangs in my wardrobe not being worn. So, how do I overcome the styling version of writer’s block? Pinterest!
Pinterest is a creative styling gold mine, choc full of outfit ideas and styling tips. For this post series, I will be taking items that have been a styling block for me in the past, using Pinterest to research ideas and then pulling together different looks inspired by Pinterest images to get get year-round value out of those hard-to-style pieces. I’m going to Wear It Her Way.
The first piece I’m tackling is the Long Line Kimono. I picked up this one from Yours Clothing, and knew I wanted to wear it with a tight long sleeve top and skinny jeans. Add some boots and I was ready to rock this Kimono for winter.
Kimono: Yours Clothing Long Line Fringe Floral Kimono – gifted
Top: Kmart plain black maternity top
Jeans: Acid wash maternity jeans from ASOS – sold out – similar in maternity here, or plus size here
Boots: Torrid (a few seasons ago)
Beanie: Turban beanie from ASOS
And that’s exactly how I wore it. I’ve worn it like that several times – I love the outfit, but I now need some different ideas on how to style this baby!
So I hit Pinterest and was flooded by tonnes of great styling ideas. Winter looks, Summer looks, Festival looks, pattern clashes, tonal dressing – a styling smogisboard of ideas. Check out my entire Pinterest board of ideas here.
To get my own creative juices flowing, I’ve taken my favourite Pinterest image and recreated the look by wearing my Long Line Kimono – Her Way. My first ‘Wear It Her Way’ image comes from ShopRiffRaff Blog and showcases a relaxed fit styling of the Kimono for winter. This is really different to how I had imagined styling the Kimono when I first bought it, and will open up a huge amount of styling options.
I was a big fan of Harem pants this season – and you guys have been as well with my post about ‘styling Harem pants in the office‘ being one of my most popular posts this year! And what’s not to love, with a forgiving cut and elastic waistband, at 8 months pregnant I’m still rocking out harem pants!
Because of the floral pattern in the Kimono, I decided to go with a plain harem pant. So I pulled out my beautiful rouge Harem pants from Christine Kardashian. These are high end and impeccably cut, I’m wearing the size 2. I’m more of a matchy-matchy dresser myself, so it didn’t actually immediately sit well with me to be drawing in another colour in addition to the florals, but this quite literal interpretation of the inspiration picture really does embody that Winter Flower Power look.
Wear It Her Way: Kimono Style Boards
This project certainly got the creative styling juices flowing, so here are soe other styling ideas, inspired by the stylish ladies of Pinterest, for rocking the Long Line Kimono year round…
Winter Night Out
There have been some really edgy Harem pants brought out this winter too, with Christine Kardashian bringing out a totally hot pair of faux leather harem pants – which would look perfect with a 17 Sundays LA afterglow tee, my kimono, strappy heels and some big bling for an sexy winter night out.
Picking up on the coral floral design in the Kimono, I’d lift the tone of the whole outfit by pairing it with light spring colours. I’ve raved about the fit of my Dorothy Perkins Eden Jeggings before – and this crop pair in Pastel Coral is the perfect shade for Spring. To add a little edge to the outfit, I’d go with a white slouchy slogan tee like this one from ASOS Curve. Paired with neutral flats and a cross-body bag, this is a great way to wear the Kimono for Spring….
Pinterest clearly showed that the hottest look for kimonos in summer is paired with either denim cut-off shorts, or a white Playsuit, and this Jodie Sleeveless Plunge Neck Playsuit from Boohoo is perfect for achieving the look. Paired with easy white strappy flats like these wide width ones from New Look via ASOS, and a tan mini cross body satchel, this outfit feels light, airy and perfect for summer.
There you have it – no longer a styling dilemma, I now have an arsenal of ways to wear my Kimono! Do you have a piece that’s a styling dilemma for you? Let me know and I’ll see what inspiration Pinterest can bring!
